Visit Our New Website
Beginning the week of July 1, we're switching to a new website host. You should still be able to find our district homepage at, but if you're seeing this site, please click here to go directly to our new district site. There you'll find more information about the website transition.
Likewise, our school websites will transition a new look, but you should still find them at the same URL addresses as before. If you don't see anything different about your school's site yet, just wait a day or two as we finish the changes.
Please take some time to explore the new sites as they go live. You will find that most information is arranged in the same way as it was, but many things have been rearranged to make the sites easier to navigate. We hope the new sites will make you feel more informed and connected to our schools than ever.

News from Pickens High School
NAHS Creates Revitalization Storyboards

At the request of the Pickens Revitalization Association, the National Art Honor Society has created two storyboards for a vacant building on Main Street in Pickens. These two art works show what sorts of businesses could be housed in the building. National Art Honor Society members designed and painted the storyboards for this community service project.

SC Letters About Literature Awards
On April 30, 2014, two students from Pickens High School were among nine students from across the state who were winners in this year’s Letters About Literature contest who were honored at the SC State Library. The students, Brooke Thomas and Samantha Wagner, placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in high school division of the contest, which is sponsored by the SC Center for the Book and the Library of Congress. There were over 700 entries in the contest.

The Letters About Literature program is a national reading and writing contest. To enter, student readers write personal letters to an author, living or dead, from any genre, explaining how that author’s work changed their way of thinking about the world or themselves. The honorees were awarded prizes by members of the SC State Library Foundation. The two Pickens High School honorees both wrote heartfelt letters to the same author, Mitch Albom, expressing how his book Tuesdays With Morrie impacted their lives.

Artist in Residence

Jim Creal, a regionally renowned printmaker from Spartanburg recently spent two weeks with PHS visual art students to teach them drypoint engraving. He instructed students how to scribe a plate, ink and wipe it, and use the printing press to create print editions.

National Art Honor Society Service Learning Project

The National Art Honor Society at Pickens High School was asked last fall to paint a mural at the Pickens Fire Department to add some much needed décor to the firemen’s sleeping quarters. After discussing the project with Chris Elrod, Pickens Fire Chief, the group designed and painted a two-part mural that celebrates the heritage of the Pickens Fire Department, which was established in 1933.

Alive at 25 Course Required for Parking Pass

Because we are committed to keeping our students safe behind the wheel, we have implemented a proactive program called Alive at 25 at all School District of Pickens County high schools. Students will not receive parking permits until they have successfully completed the course.

All upcoming classes are listed on the South Carolina Alive at 25 website: Students may register online at or by calling the South Carolina National Safety Council office at 803-732-6778. During the registration process, students should specify the name of their own high schools so certificates can be sent to the proper schools. The staff at PHS cannot register your student for Alive at 25. You must do this through the phone number listed or online.
