Performing Arts Displayed at Pickens High School
March is National Music/Theater In Our Schools Month, and to celebrate the benefits that the performing arts provide, student performers were spotlighted throughout the month. Included were the Women’s Vocal Ensemble performing a number of popular pieces, the Advanced Theater Arts Classes performing an improv show, and sophomore Levi Pinion serenading students with his talents on the baby grand piano.

The Performing Arts are on display year round but especially in the spring as plays, concerts, and a multitude of performances arrive on the calendar for the whole community to enjoy!

Alive at 25 Course Required for Parking Pass

The number of classes for Alive at 25 has been greatly reduced. There will be two more classes taught in Pickens County this school year, and both will be at PHS. The two dates are April 9 and May 7. Anyone wanting to take Alive at 25 before school ends should get signed up for one of these two dates. Since all 4 high schools will be sending people to these classes, it is important you sign up in advance and not wait to do a walk in registration since the class will probably be full.

Because we are committed to keeping our students safe behind the wheel, we have implemented a proactive program called Alive at 25 at all School District of Pickens County high schools. Students will not receive parking permits until they have successfully completed the course.

All upcoming classes are listed on the South Carolina Alive at 25 website:
www.scaliveat25.org. Students may register online at www.scaliveat25.org or by calling the South Carolina National Safety Council office at 803-732-6778. During the registration process, students should specify the name of their own high schools so certificates can be sent to the proper schools. The staff at PHS cannot register your student for Alive at 25. You must do this through the phone number listed or online.

FBLA Members Advance to State

On Saturday, Feb. 2, eleven PHS students went to Floyd D. Johnson Technology Center in York, SC for the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) District Leadership Conference. Six of those students advanced to State competition, which will be held in Charleston on April 12 – 14, 2013. Students advancing to the State competition are: Casey Stancell, Haley Phillips, Josh Hughes, Beau Jones, Angel Collins, and Andre’ Johannes. It took courage to compete, so everyone who went should have a feeling of accomplishment.

Special Delivery

On December 14, 2013 a terrible tragedy struck Newtown, Conn. This tragedy affected not only that small community but our nation as a whole. Dr. Ashley Butler found out that the Newtown community has asked that anyone wishing to honor their families do something for their own local Kindergarten classes.

Pickens High School has 6 elementary feeder schools. Denise Hodges, Kelly Sheppard, and the PHS Beta Club conducted a Teddy Bear fundraiser to honor these children and their families by presenting a Teddy Bear to each 4K child in our 6 feeder schools. The bears were delivered on February 13.
